The Democratic Party (DP) Secretary General, Gerald Siranda has announced new dates for the party’s Delegates Conference which will among others streamline how the party shall work in a coalition with other opposition forces in the general elections in 2021.

The party leadership has been pushing for a ‘One to One’ approach towards the 2021 general elections with a proposal that the opposition should choose a single candidate against NRM candidate via all elective positions.

Siranda told the media in Kampala that the members of the Delegates Conference (DC) will be tasked to among others approve or disapprove any coalition building with other opposition forces.

Siranda said that the DC will be meeting from 1st May to 5th May, 2020 in Gulu District and will bring together over 3000 delegates.

“We wish to announce that DP National Delegates Conference will take place in Gulu from 1 – 5 May, 2020. Among other things the National Delegates Conference will receive and consider various reports, consider and set terms for the party’s participation in the proposed 2021 opposition electoral coalition, consider constitutional amendments and elect the National Executive Committee,” Siranda said.

He added that the National Delegates Conference will also recognize and honour those who have stood firmly for the values of Truth and Justice over the years.

The party Presidential Press Secretary, Fred Mwesigwa revealed that in order to ensure a transparent and credible process the National Executive Committee will appoint an Interim Elections Committee which will be a team of distinguished and independent minded party members to handle the election of members of the National Executive Committee.

“This measure will ensure efficiency and transparency of the process. The establishment of an Electoral Commission will be done through a constitutional amendment,” Mwesigwa said.

The party leadership has also announced that all party members that wish to stand for any position within the party to prepare and pick nomination forms from March 16 to 17.

They added that those who pick nomination forms will be required to return the forms from 18th to 20th March and nominations shall take place on March 20th for all party positions.
