Kampala International University (KIU) has successfully maintained its multi-year streak as the number one private university in Uganda. The position was confirmed in the newly released Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which places the institution second overall nationwide.

This performance preserves a long-standing academic hierarchy in Uganda. KIU continues to hold its ground directly behind public institution Makerere University, while outlasting all other private and public competitors in the country.

The latest metrics from the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group operating under the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), show that KIU’s top ranking is not a temporary achievement. Historical tracking data confirms that the university has locked down this exact dual status across consecutive evaluation cycles.

The university’s current standing is supported by a consistent pattern of performance over the last several evaluation cycles:

  • January 2026 Edition: KIU held the top private spot and the number two overall domestic rank, while placing fifth across the entire East African region behind public legacy giants like the University of Nairobi and the University of Dar es Salaam.

  • July 2025 Edition: KIU locked in the number two national spot worldwide at rank 1,516, comfortably leading the private sector, while Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) followed in third place overall.

  • January 2025 and 2024 Editions: The university steadily climbed global brackets while maintaining its unchallenged domestic status as the premier non-state university, eventually breaking into the top 50 across the African continent.

Webometrics builds its league tables by measuring three specific performance pillars: impact visibility, transparency via researcher citations on Google Scholar, and academic excellence measured by high-tier journal publications indexed in Scopus. KIU’s steady performance across these categories reflects deliberate institutional choices.

In a post celebrating the milestone, the university attributed the success to a collective institutional effort.

“This achievement reflects the hard work of our students, staff, researchers, and partners.”

By securing its position through consecutive years of changing global criteria, KIU continues to set the benchmark for private higher education infrastructure and digital research output within Uganda.
