Egypt edge Australia to reach quarter-finals

Egypt have progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

They edged Australia 2-0 in their final group game on Wednesday. 

Ahmed Yasser Rayan and Ammar Hamdi were the scorers for Egypt.

This was a game they needed nothing else but a win.

The Young Pharaohs found themselves in a tough group that consisted of Spain, Argentina, and Australia.

But managed to progress to the knockout stage.

They started with a 0-0 draw against Spain before they lost to Argentina with a 1-0 scoreline in their second group game.

With Spain drawing with Argentina in the second game, the Europeans took the leadership of the group with five points, one more than second-placed Egypt.

Argentina came third with also four points, but the goal difference was in Egypt’s favour.

Australia finished last with just three points.

Egypt will now face Brazil in the quarter-finals on July 31 at the Saitama Stadium 2002 in Saitama.

The South Americans have a star-studded squad, with the likes of Dani Alves, Diego Carlos, Bruno Guimarães, Reinier, Richarlison, Matheus Cunha, Richarlison, and Gabriel Martinelli leading the squad.

Meanwhile, Africa’s other representative, Ivory Coast, will come up against Spain at the Miyagi Stadium, Rifu.
